Overview

Explore the Australian egg industry’s place within our country’s food production and management with Farmer John Sattler from Pure Foods, an egg farm in Tasmania. This video looks at how farmers consider the welfare of their animals in their daily practices and how farmers might use technologies to make their farming more efficient and sustainable. John talks about how he manages his farm while ensuring the best quality and value eggs possible for his consumers and how natural disasters might affect the way he makes decisions.

  • To understand how consumers have an effect on Australia food production

  • To understand how egg farmers in Australia make business decisions

This video fits well with the Australia Curriculum: Economics and Business for students in years 7 and 8 as they begin to explore the way producers respond to consumer needs and how the distribution of produce is handled. It would also support teaching on Healthy Eating and exploration on where our food comes from, as well as how health information is communicated in the media. Teachers may also link this video to learning about food chains and the survival needs of living things in different environments and the interactive lessons on animal welfare and customer choice for primary students available here, or the units of work for secondary students available here. Teachers may choose to use the following questions to provoke or encourage further investigation of the Australian egg industry:

  • Who is a consumer?

  • What is ‘supply and demand’?

  • What kind of financial decisions might egg farmers need to make?

  • How might Australian consumers influence the egg production industry?

  • How has the egg industry been influenced over time by new scientific discoveries?
