Australian Eggs Traceability Showcase, held Tuesday 23 August

Traceability in cherries

Jessica Fearnley from the NSW DPI explained how a standards-based traceability system was a major boon to the Australian potato and cherry industries.

Using a combination of product identifies, sensors and digital certification, growers that have participated have been able to reduce economic impact of recalls and assure consumers of food safety and provenance.

It’s interesting to note that although the product is different, the same technology is available to egg farmers as are the potential benefits.

The role of provenance in traceability

Provenance and traceability are two different but closely related terms. Whilst traceability refers to the ability to trace the path of a product through the supply chain, provenance is about proving its origin.

Source Certain’s Katherine Campbell presented on some of the technology currently available that uses markers in a product to verify exactly where it has come from. This technology is in use in the mining, seafood, meat and wine industries.

Daniel Ramp from UTS then demonstrated how this type of technology is being applied in the egg industry via a current Australian Eggs R&D project.

If you are interested in hearing more about any of the speakers, or about traceability in general, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Sam Cox from Dentsu Creative on [E-Mail not displayed].
