Research Project
Development of real-time PCR test to quantify infections bronchitis virus in tissues of chickens
This study was conducted to develop and evaluate the use of reverse transcriptase real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect and quantify the viral copy number of infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) from infected tissues of vaccinated and unvaccinated laying hens. The real-time PCR test designed during this project is highly sensitive and can detect as low as 10 viral copy numbers. Along with virulent ‘T’ and vaccine strains A3 and Vic S, the test will also be able to detect at least seven other Australian IBV strains.

Research Project
Composting Every Day Mortalities and Other Wastes from Layer Farms
Composting is a viable alternative method for disposing of daily mortalities, spent hens, egg and other waste produced on Australian egg farms. Under controlled systems, with the correct management, good results can be achieved and a safe, nutrient-rich soil amendment produced for reuse on-farm or sale to other farmers. This project involved on-farm compost trials at nine farms across Australia.
Research Project
Nutritive value of Lupins for laying hens
The overall aim of this research project was to provide producers and feed formulators with clear guidelines on the economics of using whole and de-hulled lupins and the need for inclusion of enzymes in layer diets containing lupins.

Layer Hen Manure Analysis Report
Poultry layer manure and litter composition data are essential for accurately determining sustainable application rates of manure to crops and pastures. This study collected some 20 samples of manure and litter from five different layer production systems from all major production regions in Australia. Compared to data previously reported for Australian layer manure and litter, there are several trends that can be observed which are likely to be the result of new management systems (belt manure removal) which produce manure with significantly shorter in-shed residence times compared to high rise sheds.
Research Project
Infectious Bursal Disease Virus
The project was initiated in response to reports in 1995 that a more severe strain of IBDV was presenting in Victoria and NSW. The study aims to characterise these strains, to compare local IBDV strains with those of other countries, and to determine whether current vaccines provide protection against the recently identified aggressive strains.
