Occurrence and control of fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) in caged hens
Since the 1950s there has been extensive research into the causes and prevention of fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS). This report confirms the presence of FLHS in caged laying flocks in Queensland, and suggests that age and housing conditions influence the incidence of FLHS in hens thereby causing producers significant economic loss.
Research Project
Diagnosing Avian Respiratory Diseases
Respiratory diseases are a major cause of economic losses to the Australian chicken meat and egg industries. This study reports on the development of a quick new diagnostic process to identify two strains of respiratory disease.
Research Project
A Comparative Study of the Nutritive Values of Triticale and Wheat for Laying Hens
This study examines whether wheat can be substituted by triticale, a generally cheaper cereal grain, without prejudice to performance of the flock or egg quality. The results show that while triticale is a useful alternative to wheat for inclusion in diets for laying hens, the particular sample of triticale used in the study was somewhat inferior in nutritive value compared to the wheat - judging by small losses in laying performance.

Research Project
How and when to introduce eggs to avoid egg allergies
As egg allergy is the most common food allergy in Australian young children, evidence is emerging to investigate preventative methods for respiratory allergic diseases in childhood. This report analyses whether the timing of egg introduction into infant diets is related to egg allergy in early childhood
Research Project
Non-invasive assessment of stress in commercial housing systems
Egg albumen corticosterone concentrations are used as a non-invasive measure of stress in laying hens because of their correlation with plasma corticosterone concentrations. This project determined the corticosterone concentrations in albumen of eggs collected from the three main production systems used in the Australian egg industry; conventional cages, free range and barn.
Research Project
Prevalence, genetic relationships and pathogenicity of intestinal spirochaetes infecting Australian poultry
This research aimed to: determine whether fastidious anaerobic intestinal spirochaetal bacteria, or a similar bacteria, was present in Australia; to isolate and characterise this bacteria; and to test the pathogenic potential of the disease.
Research Project
Egg Stamping
Also known as egg marking, egg coding or egg printing. AThe only state in Australia that currently has compulsory egg stamping is Queensland.
