“As a farm manager I enjoy my role very much, I love being in the outdoors. I love the versatility that this role brings every day. Not only do you need to have a good understanding of poultry but the shed environment and its ventilation and how it all works to create a good environment for the birds. No veterinary background whatsoever but you need to learn how to do autopsies to see if the birds are well, taking bloods to see the effectiveness of a vaccine program or to identify issues within a flock of birds. As a manager you need to be across the whole farm and have an understanding to ensure everything is good, the birds and the people. It takes more than just a manager to run a poultry farm. The responsibility of staff and rostering but also hands on training and theory and literature is key to farm staff knowledge. Computer and technical skills are a big advantage for ordering of feed and vaccines, lighting programs. There is so much to poultry that I don’t think I will ever stop learning. Leaning on other industry farmers and knowledge, what works what doesn’t is going to be the key to help the industry grow and that’s where I want to be.”
