Black soldier fly farming (BSF) provides a low-cost waste management solution for converting agricultural waste into high quality fertiliser (BSF castings or frass) and protein (BSF larvae as animal feed).

This collaborative project between industry, government and researchers aimed to develop frass as a slow-release, granulated fertilizer product that is safe to handle, transport and apply; quantify the biosecurity and environmental risks associated with applying frass to cropping and overcome the barriers to adoption by involving policy makers and farmers during trials and assisting early adopters through extension activities.

Researchers will also investigate whether black soldier fly can outcompete stable fly as a biosecurity measure and allow for manure spreading in currently prohibited areas.

This project was part of the Rural Research and Development for Profit (RnD4P) program, which combined Commonwealth grants with funding from co-contributors and RDCs (below) for the purpose of collaborative research which enhanced farm-gate profitability:

Australian Pork Limited
AgriFutures
Australian Eggs Limited
Australian Meat Processor Corporation
Dairy Australia
Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Queensland
Fisheries Research Development Corporation
Future Green Solutions
