  1. Activate the yeast: In a bowl, mix warm milk, yeast, and 1 tbsp of sugar. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, whisk eggs, melted butter, vanilla, lemon/orange zest, salt, and the remaining sugar. Add the activated yeast mixture.
  3. Knead: Gradually add flour and knead for about 10-15 minutes until the dough is soft and elastic. You may need slightly more or less flour.
  4. Let it rise: Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1.5-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the bread: Divide the dough into three equal parts and braid them. Place the braided loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Second rise: Cover and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Brush and bake: Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Brush the bread with a beaten egg yolk and sprinkle sesame seeds or sugar on top.
  8. Bake: Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool & serve: Let the bread cool before slicing. Enjoy with butter, jam, or just as it is!
