Optimising waste and by-product utilisation and conversion to value streams

This project quantified the volume of waste and by-products produced by the egg industry, and reported total nutrients contained in the by-products. In addition, a manual outlining viable strategies for by-product and waste management and utilisation was produced.

The bulk of the manual explores strategies available to manage and utilise the major by-product streams from egg production, outlining the steps producers could follow to implement the strategies, and any key considerations (costs, benefits, challenges) of which users should be aware. The manual also outlines the industry baseline and provides resources to assist users in conducting an audit (assessment) of waste and by-product volumes generated on their farm.

This audit process will help producers identify if and where they differ from the rest of industry, and the rest of the manual will help users identify management and utilisation strategies applicable to their production system, scale, and available labour and capital.

The manual is not intended to be read cover-to-cover. It has been designed with ease of navigation in mind, so that users can readily navigate to the sections of relevance to their farm (whilst skipping over those not relevant).
